BY OBINNA ONYEKACHUKWU, ENUGU – The Stay-at-home order issued by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the South East geo-political zone proved an utter failure in Enugu State on Thursday.

Despite the order, commercial activities and other social engagements were in top gear across the State as many public and private businesses remained open, attending to their clients, customers and members of the general public in a peaceful and calm atmosphere.

Our correspondent reports that it was indeed business as usual all over the state with the banks and offices fully operational and government workers as well as private individuals going about their business   without any harassment or molestation by members of the banned Brafran organization that were no where to be found.

According to the report, with security operatives parading major roads, especially in the State capital, Enugu, public and private schools in the metropolis were opened for normal academic activities for the day.

Equally, heavy human and vehicular traffic was witnessed around the busy Agbani Road axis, with many people, especially workers and school children were seen boarding commercial vehicles to different destinations within and outside the city centre.

Also, popular shopping places like Kenyatta, Garki and  Akwata markets in the metropolis as well as financial institutions, were opene d for business, with most traders on ground plying their trade as usual.

Visible among the security agencies on ground were the Nigeria police and members of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) seen mounting surveillance in strategic places, ready to ward off any security threat in the State.

However, the only noticeable shutting down of public institutions were the Catholic schools said to be on temporary break in observance of the Ascension Day.

Meanwhile, officers of the Enugu State Police Command were called to duty following the security breach by Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) 1 students who were reported to be celebrating the completion of their final examination in the State on Thursday, May 30, 2019

The police had to chase and use teargas to disperse the students who became unruly and resorted to deploying sticks and other dangerous weapons against themselves in their so-called celebration mood.

In the process, the Police arrested some of the errant youngsters who were eventually taken in for questioning and further investigation into the matter.
