BY IBRAHIM SULEIMAN – Smarting from his bruising defeat in the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election, Kano State House of Assembly member, representing Gwale Constituency, Hon. Abdulmajid Isa Umar Mai Rigar Fata has officially dumped the ruling party for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
According to sources close to the embattled lawmaker, Rigar Fata is charting a new course in a bid to salvage his political future and the NDC presents a reliable platform for him to further serve the people of Kano State.
Rigar Fata, who hails from the same Local Government Area as Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano, was formally received on Thursday, by former Kano State governor and NDC chieftain, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, at his Maitama residence in Abuja.
Kwankwaso, who has remained a key figure in Kano’s political landscape, welcomed the new entrants, describing their decision as a boost to the party’s grassroots strength in the state.
He was first elected to the seat in 2023 under the then Senator Kwankwaso-led New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), before he later followed Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to APC and his defection comes after failing to secure the APC ticket to return to the State Assembly.
Among those who joined the party were Hon. Kabiru Sani Auwal Obi, a former Vice Chairman of Gwale Local Government, and Malam Mahadi Isa Umar.
The latest development is coming on the heels of Federal High Court sweeping ruling on Thursday that has has completely altered the political landscape and blown wide open the defection floodgates which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had initially attempted to restrict with its guidelines.
