BY EDMOND ODOK – The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has deployed Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU) ambulances to several operational offices across the country to enhance emergency preparedness as the 2025 flood season sets in.
Based on vulnerability mapping and logistical priorities, the ambulances have been dispatched to operational offices in Kaduna, Owerri, and Uyo already identified as locations that are particularly susceptible to flooding and other natural hazards.
Approved by the Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, the deployment follows a nationwide assessment that identified critical equipment gaps in some field locations.
Mrs Umar said the bold initiative is part of NEMA’s broader strategy to strengthen sub-national emergency response capabilities and save lives in the wake of increasing climate-related disasters.
She explained that the MICU ambulances’ arrangement marks a strategic boost to NEMA’s zonal directorates and operational offices.
According to her, “With the increasing risk of climate-induced disasters, particularly flooding, it is imperative that our teams are well-equipped to provide immediate and effective life-saving interventions”.
A statement by the Agency’s management said the MICU ambulances are outfitted with advanced emergency medical tools, including oxygen supply systems, patient monitoring devices, suction kits, and other critical life-support equipment.
It further explained that these features make them suitable for stabilizing victims in transit, greatly improving the chances of survival in high-risk situations.
Importantly, this initiative forms part of NEMA’s wider commitment to building a resilient and responsive disaster management system nationwide.
With meteorological forecasts warning of potential severe flooding in several Nigerian states, the agency has ramped up its preparations by enhancing infrastructure, promoting community-based awareness, and coordinating closely with other emergency stakeholders.
Meanwhile, besides deploying MICU ambulances, the Agency is also conducting flood simulation drills, public sensitization campaigns, and inter-agency coordination meetings aimed at reducing disaster risks and improving national response readiness.
As Nigeria confronts the growing realities of climate change and environmental vulnerability, the latest intervention underscores the urgency of NEMA’s proactive approach and resolve to minimize loss of life and property across the country.
