Nigeria Demands Reversal Of Military Coup In Sudan
The Federal Government of Nigeria has called for the immediate restoration of the transitional government in Sudan.
This was as it condemned in strong term, the Sudanese military coup that took place on Monday, October 25, 2021.
These were contained in a statement in the evening of Monday by the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs which stated the strong opposition of the government to the military action.
According to the statement; “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls for the immediate release of the Prime Minister and all political prisoners and an immediate restoration of the transitional government and implementation of the agreed roadmap to return the country to constitutional democracy”.
In spite of the state of emergency declared by the military, pro-democracy protesters still stormed the streets of Khartoum demonstrating and demanding a reversal of the coup.
Curiously, internet services have been reportedly cut across the country just as access roads and bridges connecting with Khartoum have been closed.
Reports indicate that a crackdown by security forces on the protesters have left over a dozen people injured.
Similar coups have taken place in Mali and Guinea this year thereby fueling fears of likely more might break out of coups in the African continent.
Following the military coup by the military in Sudan, the Prime Minister, Abdallah Hamdok and many other political leaders were arrested and detained.
The head of Sudan’s military, General Abdel-Fattah Burhan, announced that the dissolution of the Government was as a result of political conflicts that have unsettled the country’s transition.
