BY VICTOR BUORO – The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has again warned that night travelling is unsafe for motorists and commuters given the deplorable state of most roads and increasing insecurity across the country.

FRSC Sector Commander in Kogi State, Mr Solomon Agure, who amplified the caution in a statement on Monday in Lokoja, also caution vehicle owners against practices and actions that clearly constitute abuses of the highway code.

He said it is difficult to have any good road experience when motorists engage in road abuses such as overspeeding, overloading, use of phone while driving, use of mechanically deficient vehicles, failure to use seatbelts, and safety crash helmet by cyclists.

According to Agure, motorists must be conscious as not to run foul of traffic rules and involve in road crashes, adding that every driver is expected to guide against all infractions and other anti-safety vices while on the highway.

Assuring that the FRSC would be all out to enforce strict compliance to safety laws and orders on the highways, especially in the ember months, Agure said arrangements are already on to commence 2021’s Ember Months and Operation Zero Tolerance to Road Traffic Campaign in Kogi.

On the campaign that would be carried out under the theme: “Maintain Safe Speed, Avoid Night Travels And Enjoy Quality Road Experience”, the Sector Commander said to achieve the goals of the operation, the Corps personnel would be highly visible on roads across the state from now till the middle of January 2022.

Agure also disclosed that the Command plans to deploy over 800 personnel, 20 patrol vehicles, four ambulances and heavy tow trucks for control of traffic across the state, stressing that the measure “aims at ensuring route lining, clear obstruction and respond to distress calls for all to have maximum road use experience during and after the period.”

The Highway Code is a set of information, advice, guides, and mandatory rules for all road users in the country. Its objective is to promote road safety and applies to all road users including motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists.
