NUJ Kano State Council Canvasses For Transport Policy To Address Reckless Driving
The Kano State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), rose from its Congress on Saturday with a called on the state government and other relevant stakeholders to develop and adopt a befitting transport policy to address the challenges posed by uncoordinated activities of some commercial transport services providers.
It noted that such a policy would go a long way in curbing issues associated with reckless driving that often times led to deaths by automobiles and under age driving.
The NUJ also decried the state of dilapidation of some access roads in the state and urge governments at all levels, corporate bodies and philanthropists to tackle the situation.
These were contained in a Communique issued at the end of the Congress signed by its Chairman and Secretary, Comrade Abbas Ibrahim and Abba Murtala respectively.
The Kano NUJ Congress equally appealed to the State House of Assembly to speedily pass the open defecation bill pending before it to curb the spread of water borne diseases in the state.
The union specifically expressed its appreciation to the state governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje for the donation of two brand new buses to the State Council and the Correspondents’ Chapel of the union and also for the awards of contract for the construction of 30 corner shops for the Union to enhance revenue generation capacity of the council.
The Communique further states; “The noble gathering appeal to the people of the state to take seriously their civic responsibility by surging out to participate in the continuous Voters Registration been carried out by the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC.
“The congress urges relevant agencies to step up efforts on the monitoring of the activities of sand miners and illicit evacuation to salvage the increasing cases of accidents in open waters, environmental hazards posed to life and the environment.
“The body commends the state government for the mass deployment of resources to the Kano Pillars, calling on the state government to the immediate and remote causes of failure to retain its position on the continental and national league log,” the NUJ Congress so resolved.
