Petrol Pump Price: NLC Raises Red Flag, Gives Notice For Strike
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has declared that it would be left with no choice than to go on indefinite strike if the pump price of petrol is raised above the present price of N617 per litre which in itself is illegal and devious.
President of the NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero, who stated the position of labour in Abuja on Monday at the meeting of the African Trade Union (ATU), stressed that even the current price of N617 per litre was a clear breach by the Federal Government of the understanding of ongoing talks between parties involved in the subsidy removal palliatives.
Ajaero specifically said that the current price is illegal given the agreements between organised labour represented by the NLC, and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the government, stressing that there was no way the price of petrol would be determined based on international price by deliberately ensuring that the nation’s refineries are not working.
The NLC President noted that the federal government had in recent times made deliberate efforts aimed at undermining the organised labour and Nigerians in spite of the goodwill so far demonstrated by the people in the face of untold hardship they are experiencing.
Ajaero therefore vowed that labour would shut down the country if par chance the ongoing permutations over higher price hike come to reality.
The latest notice of a total strike by the NLC is coming against the back drop of permutations by stakeholders in the oil sector agitating that the present N617 per litre of petrol was no longer sustainable following the weak exchange rate of the Naira against the Dollar and the price of petrol at the international market.
