Presidency Moves Against ‘Fake News’ Platforms, Debunks Ministers’ Sack
BY SEGUN ADEBAYO – In a move to check the fake news syndrome nationwide, the Presidency has directed security agencies to clampdown on websites, digital platforms, and individuals involved in aiding and abetting the dangerous trend.
Consequently, tough times now await purveyors of fake news, especially those that thrive on circulating unverified reports on their social media outlets.
This latest development follows reports that went viral on social media claiming that some key members of the Federal cabinet have been sacked by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Widely circulated online, the said report claimed that the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, and Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle have all been relieved of their appointments.
However, denying the so-called sack reports, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, cited a disclaimer issued by the pro-Tinubu group Renewed Hope United Kingdom via X (formerly Twitter).
According to Onanuga, the report is not only false but also conveys criminal intents and there need for legal action against its promoters.
He said unchecked dissemination of misinformation undermines the values of press freedom and responsible journalism, adding; “Security agencies must urgently take action against fake news websites and platforms and the purveyors who fail to check the authenticity of the stories and make them go viral”.
Furthermore, the Presidential Aide said; “Press freedom and freedom of speech will not exist when some people can wake up and concoct their news and narratives without regard for truth.
“Fake news is simply licentiousness and must be criminalised.”
The said fake report published by one of the online platforms carried the headline title; “BREAKING: Tinubu Sacks Ministers of Defense and Power.”
In categorically refuting such claims and reaffirming that no such ministerial dismissals have taken place, the Presidency said the Tinubu-led administration has continued to caution against the dangers of misinformation.
This is as the Presidency charged media users and outlets to always verify and fact-check stories before such are published or shared on their respective platforms or handles.
