BY CHINYERE OBIORA – The tragic stories of building collapse reared its ugly head again in Lagos on Sunday as a three-storey structure under construction around the Apapa axis of the State suddenly caved in due to thunder strike orchestrated by heavy downpour.

Reports indicated that the unfortunate development saw officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) moving in immediately to seal off the property that was actually meant to be a five-storey building when completed.

The collapsed building is located at No 45, Ladipo Oluwole Street, GRA, Apapa area of Lagos state and the incident comes on the heels of the seven-storey building that collapsed less than two weeks ago in the Banana Island area.

Meanwhile, a volunteer with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Asimiyu Tiamiyu, who was among the early arrivals at the incident scene, told reporters that there was no casualty recorded.

According to him, all workers at the site of the collapsed building had been released to go for the Sallah holiday and that explains why no one was affected by the unfortunate incident.

However, the NSCDC officer urged the Lagos state government to match its words with action by urgently beaming searchlight on the construction industry in order to halt the recurring building collapse incidents across the State.

He maintained that the ugly trend must be addressed quickly given that so many lives have been lost already with property worth several billions of Naira also destroyed.
