Yuletide: Julius Berger Rolls Out Plans For Lagos-Shagamu Expressway

Ahead of the reconstruction and rehabilitation works for the Lagos-bound carriageway of the Lagos-Shagamu Expressway (LSE), the contractor handling the project Julius Berger Nigeria Plc has announced plans to make traffic flow on the ever-busy highway incident-free during the yuletide season.

The Project office of Julius Berger which announced this on Monday, said that there is planned diversion of Lagos-bound traffic to Shagamu bound carriageway for the commencement works on the Lagos bound carriageway.

It explained that the work is planned to commence December 10, 2020 through February 28, 2021 assuring that during the period including the yuletide season, it does not envisage any lockdown.

Julius Berger however said that the closed section of the road currently under construction, (that is, Punch KM 13+500 to Magboro KM 14+700) will be fully opened to public traffic before the commencement of reconstruction activities from Punch KM 13+500 to Warewa KM 12+000.

On the description of works to be done, the company says; “the diversion of Lagos bound traffic from Punch to Warewa into the Sagamu bound carriageway and narrowing of both Shagamu bound traffic into two lanes on the Shagamu bound carriageway respectively.

“The expanded Shagamu bound carriageway will be divided using temporary crash barriers to accommodate two lanes each in both directions; while the Lagos bound carriageway will be closed to enable the commencement of the reconstruction and rehabilitation within the stretch of 1.5km”.

Julius Berger alerted that forseeable and impactful collision between moving vehicles, its equipment and machinery and installed barriers is proactively to be avoided by the new yuletide season work plan.

The company also said that it foresees congestion due to heavy inflow of traffic during peak periods into Magboro and Mountain of Fire Ministry. 

The Julius Berger LSE Project Team Company further said: congestion due to narrowing of the carriageway; congestion due to  broken down vehicles, congestion due to heavy inflow of traffic in and out of Berger of Lagos, is expected to be minimized by the yuletide work plan.” 

The company said it has put measures in place to mitigate any extreme happenings, which could arise, adding that the yuletide work plan, amongst other elements, include the display of advanced warning signs of road narrowing and speed restrictions signs; maintaining flagmen along the entire route; display of flashing lights at night-time, collaborating with relevant agencies of government to properly sensitise the people; displaying variable information signs in advance; and minimising response time by well-established lines of communication between various government agencies.

Additionally, the project’s management  also said that Layby will be provided for Warewa and Arepo residents while “parking and waiting on the narrowed section to pick and drop off passengers by commercial and related vehicles will be strictly prohibited; even as shoulder/earth road will be provided for facility owners on the Left Hand Side; that is, the closed section of the road, to access their properties and business premises through Punch.”

While expressing its determination to see through its well thought out programme for the successful execution of its work, Julius Berger appealed for understanding and cooperation from all users of the road especially during the yuletide season, to exercise utmost caution while plying on the ever-busy highway.
