- Accuses ruling party of mismanaging Nigeria’s resources
- Admits no pact yet with Atiku, Kwankwaso
- APC reacts, says Obi is Nigeria’s leading ‘doomsayer’
BY SEGUN ADEBAYO – The Labour Party (LP) Presidential Candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, says Nigerians must unite and work together to defeat and punish the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for clearly mismanaging the country’s resources in the last 10 years
However, he has also urged citizens to be wary of reports on the purported agreement reached with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 general elections.
For the former Governor of Anambra State, it is important that Nigerians, regardless of their political affiliations, come together to rout the APC from power for its mis-governance and criminal mismanagement of Nigeria’s commonwealth since taking over the reins of Nigeria’s leadership in 2015.
Though admitting the urgent need to form strong alliances, Obi said contrary to speculations in the public space, there is currently no merger agreement between the Labour Party and any other opposition party in the country.
He said there may have been ongoing genuine consultations among well-meaning Nigerians and political stakeholders, but the reports about the Labour Party being in bed with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to form a new alliance is obviously exaggerated.
With the 2027 presidential elections still about two years away, debates and speculations on a likely merger among the three major opposition parties have fast taken the centre stage in many quarters among Nigerians.
Obi, who failed to confirm or deny the existence of merger talks, said there was “no agreement yet” as being touted in certain circles, adding that all the reports are in the speculative realm.
The Labour Party flag-bearer, while addressing the media in Abuja on the state of the nation, urged Nigerians, regardless of their political affiliations, to unite and work together to defeat and punish the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for clearly mismanaging the country’s resources.
While also expressing concern over the disturbing security situation in the country, Obi slammed the President Bola Tinubu-led administration’s poor handling of corruption and the economy.
Describing the worrying security situation as “unfortunate”, he faulted the government’s claims of fighting corruption, arguing that the level of corruption in Nigeria remains high.
He challenged the President to aggressively combat corruption, adding that in addressing past issues of corruption, the government must ensure proper investigations and recoveries related to missing funds or their sources.
According to him; “The focus should be on eliminating current and future official malfeasance through increased transparency and accountability in public procurement and contract award processes, as well as thorough monitoring of execution to ensure that limited resources are efficiently utilized and applied productively.”
APC Fires Back, Calls Obi ‘Prophet Of Doom’
In a statement reacting to Peter Obi’s State of the Nation address and titled; “Obi is now Nigeria’s leading prophet of doom”, the ruling APC said; “While Nigerians celebrated the new year with hope for a more glorious 2025, Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, was seemingly stuck in a replay of his jangling, gloom-ridden wishlist for our country.”
The APC further maintained that; “Obi’s New Year message, in which he claimed that our dear country’s political, economic and security situation is worsening daily, is misleading and appears intended to score cheap political points.
“This claim, at a time when all indicators show that our country is rebounding in significant measure across all sectors, casts Obi, squarely, as Nigeria’s leading doomsayer.”
