BY UBON EKANEM, CALABAR – Amnesty International (AI) has challenged the Federal Government to carry out impactful judicial reforms against the backdrop of rising cases of mob attack in the country.

According to the organization, an 11 year survey report conducted across the country shows that not less than 555 avoidable death were recorded due to mob violence.

The AI Program Manager in Nigeria, Babara Magaji threw the challenge during a campaign walk against mob violence along major streets in Calabar, the Cross River State capital

According to her, it is unfortunate that no year passes without an incident of mob attack that usually result in the untimely death of the victims.

She said such practices do not speak well of Nigeria’s judicial system, noting that efforts should be geared toward ensuring public faith is restored in the processes leading to transparent adjudication of cases.

The Amnesty Czar further observed with dismay that either the public have lost faith in the ability of security agencies, especially the Police to carry out their duty transparently or something is obviously wrong with the judicial system.

She said the only way out of this quagmire is for government to undertake impactful judicial reforms that would restore public faith in the ability of the courts to dispense justice without fear or favour.

Amnesty International is a global human rights organisation working to protect human rights through advocacy, research, and campaigning. Also, it investigates and exposes human rights abuses, educates the public, and mobilizes people to take action.
