APC Crisis: Chairmanship Not A Permanent Position – Adamu Tells Associates
BY VICTOR BUORO, ABUJA – Following the threats of possible sack for voicing out that the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was not carried along in the selection of Party leadership positions in the National Assembly, the National Chairman of the ruling APC, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, has confided in some of his political associates that he was ready to leave office than to continue to subject his office, and the party to disdainful and shabby treatment.
Adamu, who made his mind known while discussing with his associates, said that he was from Day-one conscious of the fact that the chairmanship position was not a permanent seat.
He explained that he knows and understands the various positions of presiding officers and party leadership in the National Assembly and for some people to choose when Party supremacy should apply, matter and when it shouldn’t, showed that so much is left to be desired.
The APC National Chairman was quoted to have said; “How can anyone say that Majority Leader, Chief Whip and their deputies are not party positions? Is it the presiding officers that are party positions? What is in politics that I have not achieved? I cannot be threatened at this stage of my life”.
This was as it was gathered that stakeholders in the APC have kick started the process of shopping for a replacement for Adamu.
A close associate of Adamu, who does not want his name in print, said that the APC National Chairman was not unaware of the moves by some members of the party to oust him during the scheduled National Caucus and National Executive Council meetings.
The associate said; “I can assure you that our leader is aware of all the plans being hatched and he is not in any way moved. He is conscious of the fact that he is not occupying a permanent position. He has consistently said that every position in life is transient, His Excellency, Senator Adamu, is ready to go if the need arises today. No shaking, he is not loosing sleep over the matter.
This was as it was gathered that some party faithful in the North Central geo-political zone are being contacted and consulted as possible replacement.
It was further gathered that some of those consulted so far have not shown sufficient interest neither are they enthusiastic over the position owing to what they considered as the difficult operating environment for the occupant of the office with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as leader of the party.
Checks by Forefront News indicated that the APC National Chairman stepped into troubled waters on the eve of the Party primary when he announced that former President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan was the consensus candidate and later went on and declared that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as presidential candidate of the Party would be sanctioned over his derogatorily language against former President Muhammadu Buhari, who was then the leader of the party.
Tinubu had during his consultation and campaign for the presidential ticket of the Party in Abeokuta, Ogun State, said that but, for him, former President Buhari would not had been president after three attempts.
But, in his response to Tinubu, the APC National Chairman, said the party was going to take a drastic measures against him for speaking against a sitting President the way he did.
Adamau did not stop at that as he later kicked against the composition of the Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) setup by Tinubu which made some supporters and close political associates of Tinubu to hold the strong view that the APC National Chairman did not work for the victory of the party’s candidate.
Furthermore, Adamu had a meeting with members of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), declared that the selection of principal officers of the National Assembly by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio and the Speaker of House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas were without due consultations with the leadership of the party.
Adamu said; “The National Working Committee of the party was not given any such information or communicated about the choice of offices. And until we formally resolve and communicate with them in writing which is the norm and practice, it is not our intention to break away from traditions”.
