Back To Life Man United Stun Liverpool 2-1
- Record first Premiership win of new season
- Rashford, Sancho delight Old Trafford fans
Against all odds, Manchester United defied expectations to beat Liverpool 2-1 on Monday evening, with Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford scoring for the hosts to
end their season-opening slump.
In a massive turnaround of fortunes after back-to-back losses to start their campaign, United tore up the form book as they secured an impressive home victory over age-long rivals, the Reds.
Monday night victory is United’s first in their last six Premier League confrontations with Liverpool since December 16, 2018.
Racing in front through Sancho, who showed ice-cool composure to fake out James Milner and find the bottom corner from inside the box, Rashford then ended a goal drought in the second half, narrowly beating the offside flag and slotting the ball past Alisson.
The visiting Anfield side did pull one back through their talisman, Mohamed Salah with nine minutes to play, but United prevented further damage and were able to hold on for a much-needed victory.
The bigger picture is that the victory saw the Red Devils picking up their first points this new season to give Manager Erik ten Hag much needed boost, while Liverpool remain winless after three matches.
Interestingly, all eyes have been on Lisandro Martinez’s height following his arrival at United, but the defender made a key tackle to cut off Salah’s shot and then prevented Bruno Fernandes from scoring an own goal with a block on the goal line.
This shocking result means the Old Trafford Landlords, who would have gone bottom with a defeat, instead moved above Liverpool into 14th place.
Meanwhile, the Liverpool’s defeat has raised further questions about the departure of their Senegalese forward, Sadio Mane to Bayern Munich
Many pundits consider Mane and his goals as the missing piece of the Liverpool puzzle. Given his pace, he was always involved in starting the press for Liverpool and it is now becoming almost impossible to play through as the pace of the team’s press has dropped since he left for greener pastures in the German Bundesliga
With this loss, Coach Jurgen Klopp’s men are now 16th on the log with just two points from their opening three Premier League games. They will be desperate to get back to winning ways when they host Bournemouth.
And up next for United is an away trip to St Mary for another redemption clash against Southampton on Saturday. – With Goal.com reports
