Bauchi North Hit By Devastating Floods, Leaving 10 People Dead, Farms Washed Away

BY KALMANA AFSA, BAUCHI – Not fewer than ten persons have lost their lives with thousands of hectares of farmlands washed away as a result of heavy flood that badly hit about 10 Local Government Areas of Bauchi State.

The affected Local Government Areas include, Jamaare, Giade, Misau Dambam, Zaki, Darazo, Kirfi, Itas-Gadau, Shira Gamawa and Toro that also witnessed some houses washed away.

Checks indicate that the flood affected 19 of the 20 Local Government Areas of the state the 10 are the worst hit. Speaking on the devastation caused by the floods, the over-seeing Director of Planning Research and Statistics, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) in Bauchi State, Adamu Nayola said this year’s floods have never been experienced in the state.

Nayola, who spoke after inspecting the level of damage in some villages of Jamaare Local Government where some villages were completely cutoff from other parts of the Local Government and State capital, said since the onset of the season almost all the Local Government Areas of the state have been affected by the heavy downpour.

He said the heavy downpour left at least 10 people dead in different locations, adding however that the recent one is massive as it left many residents homeless just as it washed away several farmlands.

Also speaking on the devastation, the Emir of Jamaare, Nuhu Ahmed Wabi and the Deputy Chairman, Jamaare Local Government Council, Iliyasu Shuaibu, who confirmed the incident, called on the federal and state governments to come to their aid.

The duo described the devastating downpourand floods as the worst ever experienced in almost 50 years, adding that as a result of the effect of the floods, villages such as Tola, Gongo have been completely cutoff.

Shuaibu said the only option left for the residents is the use of Canoe that are paddled manually which are not usually safe.
