BY VICTOR OSOWOCHI, ABUJA – The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) late on Wednesday night reported that Coronavirus (COVID-19) fatalities in Nigeria have now risen to 200 deaths.

This is against the backdrop of explanations from the Centre that most fatalities are traceable to those cases with other underlying illnesses known as co-morbidities

Similarly, the NCDC also announced that the country recorded 284 new cases of COVID-19, thereby bringing the total number of infections to 6,677.

According to figures captured on NCDC official twitter handle, eight new patients were confirmed dead from the virus infection in the last 24 hours, just as the total number of treated and discharged patients rose to 1840 nationwide.

Furthermore, the NCDC said with no new state reporting a case in the last 24 hours, the 284 new cases were recorded in 13 states of the Federation.

Not ready to abdicate its epicentre status anytime soon, Lagos again came up with the highest figure of 199, followed by Rivers – (26) and Oyo with 19 cases.

Others are: FCT and Borno states with Eight (8) cases each; Plateau – Seven (7); Jigawa – Six (6); Kano – Five (5); Abia – Two (2) while Ekiti, Delta, Kwara and Taraba all have One (1) case each.

Meanwhile, the NCDC has apologized to Zamfara state government for erroneously announcing eight new cases in the state on Monday, May 18, 2020.

Addressing the error in one of its numerous tweets, the Centre said; “On the 18th of May, 8 new cases in Zamfara were erroneously announced

“Therefore, as at the 20th of May 2020, Zamfara has recorded a total of 76 confirmed cases

“We apologise to @Zamfara_state for this error and reiterate our commitment to accurate & transparent reporting of data.”
