In a clearance operations to check violent crimes, drug abuse, and dismantle crime-ridden areas across Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested 71 suspected criminals.

According to Police sources, the coordinated raids, carried out on Septemsber 8, targeted black spots, uncompleted buildings, and criminal hideouts across various divisions within the Territory.

The targeted areas include Apo, Gwagwalada, Maitama, Kubwa, Nyanya, Karmo, and Mabushi. Others are Asokoro, Dawaki, Mpape, Galadima, Jikwoyi, Lokogoma, Utako, and Karu

The Police sources disclosed that among recovered items are large quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, stolen phones, some household items, and other illicit drugs.

It was gathered that the suspects are currently undergoing screening and interrogation, while those found wanting would be charged to court at the appropriate time.

Police insiders said the coordinated clampdown was initiated following series of disturbing incidents that have heightened public concerns over the security situation in the nation’s capital.

Available reports indicated that on September 9, operatives from Byazhin Division rescued one Mary Moore, 40, who was allegedly abducted in Keffi, Nasarawa State, before being found wandering in the Byazhin axis of the city

Moore reportedly informed Police operatives that her kidnappers sprayed a substance on her face, rendering her unconscious before dispossessing her of valuables.

However, following her rescue, Moore was handed over to the FCT Administration for immediate medical checks.

Also, reports indicated that on the same day, detectives in Gwagwalada launched an investigation into a decomposing body of an unidentified mentally challenged man discovered in the Ibwa 1 area.

But following consultations with the community leaders, the man’s remains were buried in line with local customs.

Additionally, the Police in Gwagwalada are currently probing a suspected case of culpable homicide involving 24-year-old Ebubechukwu Sunday Kelechi, who died in her fiancé’s home on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.

Preliminary findings indicate she had been battling malaria, with medications found at the scene. No signs of violence were observed on her body, though her fiancé remains in custody as investigations continue.

In another shocking incident, residents of Durumi 2 in Abuja woke up to discover the body of a day-old baby abandoned behind the Assembly of God Church.

Medical personnel at the local Primary Health Centre confirmed the infant dead and later buried the body according to local traditional rites.

Meanwhile, security experts and community leaders have expressed happiness at the massive arrest of suspects, noting that the development underscores the FCT Police Command’s resolve to stem criminality within the Territory.

They noted that stronger community-police collaboration remains an essential tool in tackling the root causes of violent crime, drug abuse, and social neglect in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
