Former ECOMOG Chief, Brig-Gen John Shagaya Is Dead

Former Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) Peacekeeping Commander in Liberia, Brigadier-Gen John Nanzip Shagaya is dead.  

General Shagaya, an erstwhile Senator representing Plateau South in the National Assembly between 2007 and 2011, died in a motor accident on Sunday afternoon while returning to Jos from Langtang Local Government Area of Plateau State

The late Army General was also a former Minister of Internal Affairs under Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida’s regime between 1985 and 1993.

Considered one of the intellectual minds in the military, Shagaya was until his death the Chairman, Governing Board of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, near Jos.

Further details were still being expected on his death at the time of filling this report.

Late General Shagaya was one of the stand-out Commanders of ECOMOG, put together as a West African multilateral armed force established by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to intervene in Liberia. It was a formal arrangement for separate armies within the sub-region to work together for peace in the then war-torn Liberia.
