The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has applauded the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, for driving initiatives aimed at equipping Nigerian girls with practical digital skills.

The NCC noted that the policy drive of the Minister would go a long way in expanding access to opportunities in the tech sector.

The Commission further said that the programme is intended to encourage young girls to see themselves as active participants in Nigeria’s digital transformation.

The NCC which stated these during its sponsored 2026 National Girls in ICT Programme that witnessed the hosting of 185 female students from different parts of the country at the National Communications Museum in Abuja for an educational tour, said that the initiative is part of its broader effort to bridge the gender gap in technology.

Ther commission also said that the programme would strengthen the pipeline of young female talent entering Nigeria’s fast-growing digital economy.

The students were taken through exhibits showcasing the evolution of telecommunications in Nigeria from early telephony systems to modern broadband infrastructure and digital communication services.

This was as the organisers said the experience was designed to make the history of the sector more relatable as well as inspire curiosity about future careers in technology.

According to the NCC; “By exposing them to both the history and future of ICT, the Commission aims to boost interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), as well as broader ICT-related careers”.

The commission also said that the initiative aligned with the national digital inclusion goals and supports efforts to empower the next generation of female innovators, entrepreneurs, and tech leaders.

It further said that closing the gender gap in ICT remains essential for inclusive economic growth and a more diverse digital ecosystem.

The Girls in ICT Programme has continue to serve as a platform opening up barriers that hitherto limit girls’ participation in technology while nurturing early interest in digital careers across Nigeria.
