NBC Fines Channels, AIT, Arise TV Over #EndSARS Reportage, Lekki Shooting
BY EDMOND ODOK, ABUJA – For their alleged roles in escalating violence across the country following the #EndSARS protests, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has sanctioned three major broadcast stations in the country
The organizations that got on the regulators’ wrong side are Channels Television, Arise TV, and African Independent Television (AIT).
The Commission’s Director General, Professor Armstrong Idachaba, said the listed media houses were sanctioned due to their unprofessional coverage of the ongoing protests in the country.
They have been fined between N2 million and N3 million for running foul of the nation’s broadcasting codes and regulations.
According to the NBC, the stations came under the hammer for airing unverified images of alleged shooting of the #EndSARS campaigners.
The protest, which initially began on a peaceful note, went awry thereafter with the alleged shooting of peaceful protesters at Lekki sparking off violence across Lagos and all the South West States.
The mayhem eventually spilled over to many states in the South South and South East with wanton destructions and looting of public and private properties taken to the extreme by hoodlums.
