Nigeria Clearly Heading In The Direction Of A One-party State – Dele Momodu Says
A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Dele Momodu has said that Nigeria is clearly heading in the direction of a one-party state.
Momodu also said that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), is so fearful of opposition that it is actively engineering crises across major opposition political parties, stressing that it is evident that there is a coordinated effort to destroy any meaningful resistance.
He expressed unease about the uncertain future of Nigeria’s political landscape, saying that everyone can see what is happening, adding however, that how the situation will unfold is beyond prediction.
In the words of Momodu; “For now, all we can do is observe and hope for a resolution. The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is deliberately orchestrating chaos within opposition parties to weaken them and steer Nigeria toward becoming a one-party state.
Momodu, who stated these during an interview with Arise News, on Thursday, January 23, 2025, noted that the APC is leveraging its control of state power to destabilize key opposition parties such as the PDP, Labour Party (LP), and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP)”.
He further said that the tactics were designed to prevent opposition parties from functioning effectively, thereby consolidating the ruling party’s dominance.
Momodu also spoke about the internal issues within the PDP, saying that the party is its own worst enemy, just as he attributed much of the ongoing crisis in the PDP to unresolved conflicts stemming from the 2022 primary elections which the APC took advantage of to further weaken the party.
Momodu particularly expressed concern about the deteriorating state of the PDP, stressing that some members who lost nomination during the 2022 primaries are still nursing grievances and have yet to fully recover from their defeat.
In the words of Momodu; “The unresolved bitterness has left the party vulnerable to external interference. There are individuals who lost during the PDP primaries in 2022 who are still deeply resentful.
“Many have unofficially aligned with other parties, yet they remain connected to the PDP, whether out of love, hatred, or indecision,” he said.
He pointedly accused the APC of employing deliberate strategies to sow discord within opposition parties, adding that the APC is particularly focused on destabilizing prominent opposition groups such as the PDP, Labour Party, and NNPP just to weaken their collective strength.
According to him; “The party’s internal discord can be traced to the fallout of its 2022 presidential primaries which saw the defeat of former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike by Atiku Abubakar and the subsequent failure to select Wike as Atiku’s running mate as a major turning point in the party’s troubles.
“The crisis began when former Governor Wike lost the presidential primary to Atiku Abubakar and was overlooked for the vice-presidential slot.
“Since then, Wike’s alignment has shifted. While he may not have physically left the PDP, it’s clear that his political loyalty now lies with the APC.
“However, he is yet to find the courage to physically join APC because he knows he would not be able to wield the kind of power he wields in the PDP. Right now, where his friends are holding sway, he is empowering them and encouraging them to keep PDP under the water,” Momodu said.
