- Eye new party to challenge status quo
BY OUR CORRESPONDENT – The League of Northern Democrats (LND) says a new political party is in the offing to challenge the status quo and make Nigeria a truly democratic nation.
For the LND, Nigerians are tired of the shenanigans of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the country’s political space and ultimately desire a breathe of fresh air going forward.
Consequently, one of the leading lights in the LND, former Kano governor, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, and his colleagues are currently fine-tuning plans to transform the group into a formidable political party.
Insiders confirmed that the LND, which started as a pro-northern movement advocating governance reforms, is gearing to expand its tentacles and reach to all the geo-political zones in the South with the aim of consolidating into a unified League of National Democrats (ULND).
Speaking on their plans, LND Convener, Dr Umar Ardo, said the new party being envisioned will be rooted in democratic values and committed to institutional renewal.
Ardo, who slammed the APC and PDP for governance failures, citing a lack of patriotism and sacrifice, further lamented that both parties have continued to prioritise loyalty over competence, leading to governance structures that favour patronage over public interest.
According to him, the LND’s agenda includes tackling systemic problems like poverty, insecurity, and corruption, adding; “This clarion call resonates deeply with the aspirations of many Nigerians yearning for a break from the vicious cycle of ineffectual governance.”
Also hammering on LND’s moves in reaching out to true Democrats nationwide toward registering an all-encompassing political party, Ardo said; “There is no going back on our plans to uproot both the APC and PDP from Nigeria’s political life given their mis-governance and suffering visited on Nigerians.
“So, rooted in democratic values and committed to institutional renewal, the LND represents a beacon of hope for a country at the crossroads of decline and resurgence.”
