Immediate past Governor of Kano State, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has been appointed as the new National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

His appointment came from the Party’s 12th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Thursday, August 3, 2023 in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Ganduje replaced the former National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, forced to resign in July following irreconcilable differences between him and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is the leader of the party in his capacity as the President.

Similarly, former Chairman of the Senate Committee on Information, Senator Ajibola Bashiru was also appointed and confirmed as the APC National Secretary. He replaced Senator Iyiola Omisore, who resigned alongside Adamu.

The appointment comes against the backdrop of speculations that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had anointed Ganduje, considered a close ally, for the Chairmanship seat as part of moves to consolidate his stranglehold on the ruling Party’s political structures.

Forefront News confirmed from insider sources that the NEC’s endorsement of Ganduje as Adamu’s successor was just a formality because the President did not hide his preference for the former Kano State Chief Executive given their long-standing relationship as one of his core loyalists within the party.

Speaking at the NEC meeting, President Tinubu said having won the elections as the ruling Party, it was time for APC to up the tempo by working hard to deliver the promises of good governance to the Nigerian people, maintaining that the 2023 general elections were the best ever in Nigeria’s history.

The roll call at the NEC showed that while President Tinubu, and Vice-President Kashim Shettima were in attendance, many members of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) and key chieftains of the party, including immediate past President Muhammadu Buhari, and former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo were conspicuously absent at the meeting.

Meanwhile, the wave of resignations that saw ex-Chairman Senator Abdullahi Adamu; National Secretary, Senator Iyiola Omisore, and Salihu Lukman, National Vice Chairman, North-West Zone, bidding the National Working Committee (NWC) farewell, also swept away the Party’s National Legal Adviser, Ahmed El-Marzuk.

El-Marzuk took his leave from the NWC on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, following some of his colleagues’ insistence that due to mounting allegations against his person, he no longer enjoys the benefit of their trust to continue staying put in office as the APC’s Legal Adviser
