Guber Poll Outcome: Zamfara Imposes Dusk To Dawn Curfew
Following the March 18 electoral upset in the gubernatorial poll, the Zamfara State Government has imposed a statewide curfew to checkmate possible breakdown of law and order in the State.
Tension had mounted in the North West State after the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Governor Bello Matawalle lost his re-election bid to Dauda Lawal Dare of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The State Commissioner for Information, Ibrahim Dosara, said the government took the measure in order to check likely violence, stressing that; “The government of Zamfara state has noticed with dismay, the wanton destruction and vandalisation of government and public property and assets where several innocent citizens are being inflicted with various degrees of injuries in the name of celebration of yesterday’s declaration of Governorship election results.”
A statement released in Gusau on Tuesday quoted Dosara as saying; “Reports available to the government indicate that some lives were lost, houses and personal effects destroyed and shops were burgled.
“To guard against these acts, government finds it imperative to impose statewide curfew from 8 pm to 6am until peace is restored. Security agencies are therefore directed to ensure compliance.”
The curfew in Zamfara is coming about 24 hours after the Kano State government took similar steps after the governorship election results were announced by the Returning Officer in which the APC flag bearer and State Deputy Governor, Nasir Gawuna lost to Abba Yusuf, the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) candidate.
But despite the curfew declared by the Governor Abdullahi Ganduje-led administration to check violent celebrations, some NNPP supporters still trooped to the streets in their thousands to celebrate their party’s victory over the ruling APC.
